A new ‘small penis’ and period blood emoji are among 270 new emoji characters destined to arrive on iPhone and iPad in late 2019 following approval by the Unicode Consortium on Tuesday.
The update will see new emojis such as a Yawning Face, Otter, Wheelchair, and more arrive later in the year when Apple and other smartphone makers begin adding support for Unicode Emoji 12.0.
The Unicode Consortium describes the new ‘tiny tackle’ emoji as a pinching hand”, but many people have said it will be used to suggest the size of a man’s penis. The update will also include a “blood drop” emoji which is being referred to as an official period blood emoji.
More than 55,000 people joined a campaign led by Plan International UK to get a period blood emoji added to Unicode’s list of emoji characters as part of an effort to break down stigma surrounding women’s “time of the month”. – The charity aimed to secure an emoji featuring a pair of pants with two blood drops on it, although this wasn’t approved.

The emoji in the Emojipedia images are representations of what the new emoji characters could look like, it is ultimately up to Apple and other smartphone companies to make the final designs based on these initial visuals.
