Apple discontinues ageing AirPort router line

Apple has announced that it has officially ended development on its AirPort line of products, noting the line that includes the AirPort Express, the AirPort Extreme, and the AirPort Time Capsule, will remain available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers while remaining supplies last.

The AirPort line has been untouched for a number of years, with Apple most recently adding, then removing the AirPort Express WiFi router from the Home app in iOS 11.4 beta 2.

The news comes from an Apple spokesperson who told iMore of the discontinuation on Thursday.

We’re discontinuing the Apple AirPort base station products. They will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.

Bloomberg reported in late 2016 that Apple “has disbanded its division that develops wireless routers, another move to try to sharpen the company’s focus on consumer products that generate the bulk of its revenue.
