HomePod Can Take Over Audio Just by Bringing Your iPhone Close

You do not need to dig through the AirPlay menu every time you want to move audio between iPhone and HomePod.

With Transfer to HomePod enabled, bringing your iPhone close to the top of a HomePod can hand off whatever you are listening to. The same interaction can move audio back to the iPhone when you are ready to leave the room.

The feature works with music, podcasts and other supported audio, and it can also be useful during calls. Your iPhone and HomePod need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, Bluetooth must be on, and both devices should be associated with the same Apple Home.

If nothing happens when you bring the devices together, check Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity on iPhone and make sure Transfer to HomePod is enabled.

Because the feature is proximity-based, it can feel much quicker than opening Control Centre and manually changing the playback destination each time.

It is especially handy in kitchens, bedrooms and home offices where a HomePod is already within arm’s reach.
