Apple debuts PROLED XDR tandem OLED display on new MacBook Pro

Apple has introduced a new PROLED XDR display on the MacBook Pro, using tandem OLED technology to deliver up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR and SDR brightness and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio.

The display was announced as part of Apple’s new MacBook Pro launch and is available across the new 14-inch and 16-inch models.

Rather than using a traditional single OLED layer, the PROLED XDR panel uses two self-illuminating pixel layers. Apple says the design improves brightness, contrast and uniformity while reducing blooming and halos.

The display also supports adaptive refresh rates from 10Hz to 120Hz with ProMotion and expands color support beyond P3 to include Adobe RGB. Apple says the wider gamut covers more than 80 percent of Rec. 2020, making the display more useful for HDR video, photography, print and color-critical workflows.

An advanced display engine controls the luminance and color of each pixel in real time, compensating for content, temperature, environment and pixel usage. Apple says this helps maintain consistent brightness and grayscale accuracy across the panel.

For use in bright environments, the MacBook Pro can reach up to 2,000 nits of peak SDR brightness and includes an anti-reflective coating. A nano-texture option is also available for users who want to further reduce glare.

The display is also central to two of the MacBook Pro’s biggest interface changes: Touch is integrated directly into the panel for the first time on a Mac, while Dynamic Island sits at the top of the display for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI.

The new MacBook Pro is available to pre-order now, with availability beginning Friday, November 6.
