Apple says iPhone Duo won’t be available for walk-in purchase in Japan without a reservation

Apple has now given one of its clearest indications yet that iPhone Duo walk-in availability will be extremely limited at launch, with the company’s Japanese retail website warning customers that they will not be able to buy the new foldable iPhone at a local Apple Store without a reservation for a limited time.

Apple’s Japanese retail website currently states that, for a limited period, customers will not be able to purchase the latest iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro Max at a nearby Apple Store without a reservation.

The wording is significant because Apple has so far stopped short of giving a broad, global guarantee that iPhone Duo will be available for walk-in purchases on launch day. The new Japan-specific message makes clear that at least in that market, simply joining a line and hoping to buy one will not be enough.

Mac Otakara highlighted the notice in a post on X, prompting Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman to note that Apple is displaying a similar message in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea, although in those markets the restriction currently appears to apply only to iPhone 18 Pro Max rather than iPhone Duo. The exchange can be viewed on X.

That regional difference suggests Apple may be handling iPhone Duo launch inventory differently from market to market, rather than using one global policy for walk-in purchases.

The update strengthens concerns around launch-day supply. The Apple Post previously reported that Apple had not clearly confirmed whether customers would be able to walk into an Apple Store and buy an iPhone Duo on October 23, while Gurman warned that some people could end up waiting in line without knowing whether sellable stock would be available.

Our launch-day buying guide recommends checking Apple Store pickup availability online before travelling, and the message now appearing on Apple’s Japanese website makes that advice even more important for customers in Japan.

Online availability is already heavily constrained. iPhone Duo delivery estimates slipped into 2027 shortly after pre-orders opened, with some configurations moving toward February as Apple’s initial allocation sold through.

Apple says iPhone Duo officially launches on Friday, October 23. The company has confirmed that customers will be able to shop for the device in stores where it is sold, but the Japan notice shows that a reservation may be required to actually purchase one during the early launch period.
