You do not always need a separate identification app to work out what is in a photo. iPhone can recognise a growing range of subjects directly from the Photos app using Visual Look Up.
Open a photo and look for the Info button. When Visual Look Up has recognised something, the button can show a small sparkle. Tap it and you may see an icon over the subject, such as a leaf for a plant or an animal symbol for a pet.
Apple says Visual Look Up can identify subjects including plants, dog breeds, art and popular landmarks. Results can draw on Siri Knowledge and information from the web, giving you a quick answer without manually describing the image in a search engine.
The feature is particularly useful with pictures you took some time ago. A flower from a holiday, an unfamiliar dog breed or a landmark you cannot quite place can often be identified from the image already sitting in your library.
Visual Look Up also works in some other apps. Depending on where an image appears, you can touch and hold it or use Look Up from the available menu rather than saving the picture first.
Not every photo produces a result. If the Info button does not show the Visual Look Up indicator, iPhone has not found a supported subject it can confidently identify.
It is one of those iPhone features that is easy to miss because there is no separate app for it. The capability is tucked into Photos and appears only when there is something useful to recognise.
