Apple’s biggest MacBook Pro update in years could launch this month

Apple’s long-rumored touchscreen MacBook Pro could finally arrive before the end of October, with new reporting narrowing the expected launch to just a matter of weeks.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing a new product presentation on or around Tuesday, October 27, with redesigned high-end MacBook Pro models expected to be among the headline announcements.

The timing is the clearest indication yet that one of the biggest changes to the MacBook Pro in years could arrive this month rather than slipping further into the fall.

What to expect from the new MacBook Pro

Apple is reportedly preparing new 14-inch and 16-inch models featuring OLED displays and touchscreen support, bringing direct touch input to a Mac notebook for the first time.

The new machines are also expected to replace the familiar MacBook Pro display notch with a Dynamic Island-style interface and be significantly lighter than the current generation.

The Apple Post has been tracking the redesign closely. Earlier reporting pointed to an October launch for the OLED touchscreen MacBook Pro, while more recent details suggested the redesigned models will be significantly lighter than today’s machines.

Apple is expected to equip the high-end models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, creating an unusual lineup because a separate entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro is reportedly set to move ahead to the newer M6 chip while retaining the current design.

That entry-level M6 model could arrive at the same late-October presentation. The Apple Post previously reported that the M6 MacBook Pro could launch in October ahead of the larger redesign.

macOS 27.2 is adding to the evidence

The hardware rumors are also being accompanied by changes in Apple’s software. Recent macOS 27.2 betas have introduced more touch-like interface behavior, including a long-press-style Dock animation that resembles interactions already used on iPhone and iPad.

The Apple Post reported this week that macOS 27.2 contains additional clues pointing to a touchscreen MacBook Pro, strengthening signs that Apple is preparing macOS for direct interaction with a display.

OLED would mark another major change. Current high-end MacBook Pro models use mini-LED displays, while the upcoming machines are expected to move to OLED for deeper blacks and improved contrast alongside the addition of touch input.

The MacBook Pro may not be alone at the reported late-October launch. Apple is also expected to introduce an OLED iPad mini, an M6 iMac and the new entry-level M6 14-inch MacBook Pro as part of the same round of announcements.

The presentation is reportedly planned for on or around October 27, two weeks after Apple’s separate “Welcome home” event on October 13. That earlier event is expected to focus primarily on Apple’s new smart home hardware.

If the latest timing holds, the wait for Apple’s touchscreen Mac could be almost over. The Apple Post app for iPhone and iPad will have the latest coverage and analysis as Apple’s remaining October announcements unfold.
