Apple has an ‘iCup’ team you probably never knew existed

Apple is known for teams working on everything from custom silicon to industrial design, but a newly highlighted job listing has revealed one of the company’s more unexpected internal operations.

The company is currently advertising for an “iCup Supply Specialist” in Santa Clara, California, a full-time role within Apple’s Corporate Functions organization. The listing was highlighted by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.

Despite the distinctly Apple-sounding name, iCup has nothing to do with a secret new product. It is Apple’s internal coffee service.

“At Apple, we take coffee seriously,” the company says in the listing, explaining that the iCup service team is responsible for ensuring employees have access to freshly brewed coffee in their break rooms.

The scale of the operation is perhaps the most surprising part. Apple says the successful applicant will work as a route operator, sanitizing, cleaning and restocking as many as 90 bean-to-cup coffee machines across the Santa Clara Valley.

The day-to-day job includes refilling coffee beans and supplies, cleaning food-contact surfaces, responding to service calls and communicating with building managers and administrators. The specialist reports to Apple’s iCup Service Supervisor.

Applicants need a high school diploma or equivalent, knowledge of safe food handling practices and previous experience in areas including route or delivery work, customer service and warehouse or grocery operations. A driver’s license and clean driving record are also required because the job involves traveling between Apple locations.

Apple’s use of the iCup name is not new. The company was publicly recruiting for an “iCup Technician” as far back as 2014, suggesting its unusually branded internal coffee operation has quietly existed for more than a decade.

The current position was posted on September 28 and is based in Santa Clara, close to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino.
