Apple has confirmed that a software update is coming to fix an iPhone 18 Pro bug that can cause affected devices to freeze and restart following a failed Face ID attempt.
The issue has been reported by some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users since the new devices launched, with affected iPhones becoming unresponsive before unexpectedly rebooting after Face ID fails to authenticate.
Apple has now confirmed to 9to5Mac that a software update addressing the problem is in development and is expected to be released early next week.
The bug does not appear to affect every iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max. Reports from affected users suggest it can occur when Face ID is used to authenticate inside apps, with the iPhone freezing after an unsuccessful scan before restarting.
Affected devices can generate a panic log following the restart, which can be found in the Analytics section of the Settings app.
The confirmation is significant for owners concerned that the behavior could indicate a hardware problem. Apple’s planned software fix means customers experiencing the issue should not need to replace their iPhone to resolve it.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature a redesigned Face ID system as part of Apple’s smaller Dynamic Island design. The infrared camera has moved beneath the display, helping Apple reduce the visible size of the Dynamic Island.
Apple launched the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 18 with iOS 27.
Apple is also testing iOS 27.0.1, which has begun appearing in web analytics. While Apple has not confirmed which software version will contain the Face ID fix, iOS 27.0.1 is likely to be the update released early next week.
Until the update arrives, users affected by the rebooting issue can restart their iPhone and continue using it, although the problem may reoccur following another failed Face ID authentication.
