Apple’s next iPad mini is shaping up to be one of the company’s biggest remaining launches of 2026, with the compact tablet reportedly on track for October with an OLED display and a much newer chip.
The updated model is expected to use either an A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip, while OLED would replace the LCD panel used by the current iPad mini. Reports have also pointed to improved water resistance and a redesigned speaker system without conventional speaker holes.
The Apple Post reported last month that Apple was targeting a launch by late October. More recent reports continue to include the iPad mini among Apple’s remaining products for this year.
OLED is likely to be the headline change. The technology allows individual pixels to produce their own light, bringing deeper blacks and stronger contrast than the LCD panel in the current model. The display is nevertheless expected to remain at 60Hz rather than gaining the 120Hz ProMotion technology used by iPad Pro.
The processor is less settled. Apple has been linked to both A19 Pro and A20-class silicon for the tablet, either of which would represent a substantial jump from the A17 Pro in the current iPad mini and give Apple more headroom for Apple Intelligence.
Apple may also make the small iPad more durable. Reports have suggested the company is exploring improved water resistance alongside a speaker design that uses vibration technology rather than traditional openings in the enclosure.
The iPad mini was one of the notable products missing from Apple’s September event, but that was not unexpected. Apple has repeatedly used October for iPad announcements.
It may now form part of a much larger second wave. Apple is also rumored to have new Macs and Home products waiting for the fall, although another formal event has not been announced.
