AppleCare One Family vs Individual: Which plan should you choose?

AppleCare One now comes in two versions in the United States, giving customers a choice between covering their own collection of Apple products or protecting eligible devices across an entire Family Sharing group. The difference in price is substantial, but for households with enough Apple hardware, the Family plan can quickly become the simpler option.

AppleCare One Individual starts at $19.99 per month and covers up to three eligible products owned by one person. Additional products can be added for $5.99 per month each. AppleCare One Family costs $49.99 per month and extends coverage to eligible products belonging to up to six people in the same Family Sharing group, without charging separately for each additional device.

That makes the right choice largely dependent on how many people and products need protection. For someone covering three devices, Individual costs $19.99 per month, while even seven devices would cost $43.95 per month. At eight devices, Individual reaches $49.94 per month, almost exactly the cost of Family, while nine devices would take the Individual plan to $55.93 per month.

When AppleCare One Family starts to make sense

The calculation changes when several people need coverage. Two people each paying for an Individual plan covering three devices would spend $39.98 per month. If both added a fourth device, the combined price would rise to $51.96, slightly more than the $49.99 Family subscription.

Three people each needing their own Individual subscription would spend at least $59.97 per month before adding any extra devices, making the fixed Family price cheaper on subscription cost alone.

AppleCare One Family also removes much of the work involved in managing coverage. Apple says current eligible products associated with members of the Family Sharing group are covered, while newly purchased eligible products are automatically added without increasing the monthly price.

The Family plan includes the core AppleCare+ benefits, including accidental damage protection, battery service and priority support. Theft and loss coverage is also included for eligible iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch models. Service fees and deductibles still apply when making certain claims.

There are differences beyond the monthly price

AppleCare One Family provides up to six theft or loss claims during a 12-month period, shared across the Family Sharing group. The Individual plan provides up to three theft or loss claims. Accidental damage repairs are not subject to that same shared claim limit.

Device eligibility matters too. Apple says most devices less than four years old can be added if they are in good working condition, although a device check may be required. AirPods and Beats headphones generally need to be less than one year old. Existing AppleCare coverage on eligible devices is canceled when those products move to the Family plan, with Apple providing an applicable refund for unused coverage.

For one person with a relatively small number of Apple products, AppleCare One Individual remains the lower-cost route. The Family plan becomes more compelling when several members of the same household already pay for AppleCare coverage, or when a Family Sharing group owns a large and growing collection of eligible devices.

There is an important regional difference for customers outside the United States. AppleCare One Individual is available in the United Kingdom from £16.99 per month for three products, with additional products costing £4.99 per month each. AppleCare One Family is currently limited to customers with a United States Apple Account, so UK customers cannot yet choose between the two plans.
