Apple’s new AirPods 5 arrive with one less accessory in the box, with customers now expected to provide their own USB-C charging cable.
Apple’s technical specifications for AirPods 5 list the earbuds, charging case and documentation as the contents of the package, but no USB-C cable. The change applies as Apple introduces its redesigned fifth-generation AirPods lineup.
For many buyers this is unlikely to be a major inconvenience. USB-C has become standard across Apple’s current iPhone, iPad and Mac lineups, meaning many customers will already have a compatible cable and power adapter at home.

AirPods 5 start at $129 and now include Active Noise Cancellation as standard. Apple is also selling a $149 version with a Wireless Charging Case, which adds wireless charging, swipe-based volume controls and additional battery life.
The more expensive case can be charged wirelessly using compatible chargers, reducing the need to connect a cable at all for customers who already use a wireless charging setup.
Removing the cable continues Apple’s broader move toward reducing accessories bundled with its devices. iPhones have shipped without a power adapter for several generations, although Apple continues to include a USB-C charging cable with current iPhones.
Customers buying the standard AirPods 5 will therefore need access to a USB-C cable to recharge the case. An existing USB-C to USB-C cable from another recent Apple device will work.
AirPods 5 are available to pre-order now and will reach customers on September 18 alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
