Apple is giving millions of existing iPhone owners another year of free access to its satellite connectivity features, extending the complimentary period for eligible iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 users.
Apple confirmed the extension alongside its new iPhone announcements this week. The additional year applies to existing iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 users whose devices were activated in a country supporting Apple’s satellite features before midnight Pacific Time on September 9.
The extension means eligible users can continue accessing Apple’s satellite services without paying when they are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
Apple first introduced Emergency SOS via satellite with the iPhone 14 in 2022, initially promising two years of complimentary access. The company subsequently extended free access for existing iPhone 14 customers and has continued expanding what an iPhone can do over a satellite connection.
Today, Apple’s satellite functionality goes considerably further than its original emergency feature.
On supported iPhones, users can contact emergency services through Emergency SOS via satellite, request roadside assistance where available, send messages to friends and family, and update their location through Find My when conventional connectivity isn’t available.
Apple says satellite features are available on iPhone 14 and later, although individual services and availability differ depending on the country or region.
When an iPhone needs to establish a satellite connection, Apple’s Connection Assistant guides the user toward an available satellite. A clear view of the sky and horizon provides the strongest connection, while buildings, mountains and dense foliage can interfere with the signal.
Apple says messages can take around 30 seconds to send under ideal conditions and potentially longer when there are obstructions.
The latest extension is notable because Apple still hasn’t outlined what it eventually intends to charge for its own satellite services. Despite initially describing access as complimentary for a limited period, the company has repeatedly extended free availability for eligible customers rather than introducing a paid subscription.
Apple confirmed the additional year while announcing iPhone Duo, which also supports the company’s satellite connectivity features.
