Apple is bringing Apple Pencil support to iPhone for the first time, with the new iPhone Duo set to gain compatibility with Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.
The addition is made possible by iPhone Duo’s foldable design, which opens to reveal a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display that is 50 percent larger than the display on iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Apple says Apple Pencil will work with both the inner and outer displays, allowing users to take handwritten notes, sketch and mark up documents whether iPhone Duo is open or closed.
The inner screen is the largest display Apple has ever offered on an iPhone and features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and reflections. Both displays support ProMotion and Always On and can reach 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Apple Pencil support gives iPhone Duo another capability traditionally associated with iPad, alongside a significantly expanded multitasking system in iOS 27. The foldable model can run two apps side by side through Split View and can even open two windows of the same app simultaneously.
Apple has not said that Apple Pencil support will extend to other iPhone models. Its announcement specifically identifies Apple Pencil with USB-C compatibility for iPhone Duo.
The feature will not be available when the phone first goes on sale. Apple says Apple Pencil support will arrive later this year through a software update.
iPhone Duo launches on October 23 following pre-orders beginning October 16. The foldable iPhone starts at $1,999 in the United States.
