Apple has unveiled AirPods 5, bringing Active Noise Cancellation to its most affordable AirPods while introducing redesigned acoustics, improved durability, Siri AI support and Live Translation.
The fifth-generation AirPods use a new multiport acoustic architecture and next-generation Adaptive EQ. Apple says the Active Noise Cancellation system can remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC despite retaining an open-ear design.
The announcement follows reports earlier today that Apple was preparing two versions of AirPods 5. Apple has indeed split the lineup into two configurations, although the distinction centers on the charging case, battery life and controls rather than reserving ANC for the more expensive model.
Both AirPods 5 versions include ANC alongside an improved Transparency mode. Adaptive Audio can automatically blend noise cancellation and Transparency depending on the wearer’s surroundings, while Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when the user begins speaking.
Sound quality has been reworked using technology inspired by AirPods Pro 3. Apple says the new acoustic architecture and Adaptive EQ can produce richer, more detailed audio across a wider variety of ear shapes, while Personalized Spatial Audio is designed to sound more immersive.
AirPods 5 also tie into Siri AI when paired with a compatible Apple Intelligence iPhone running iOS 27. Users can ask Siri questions based on personal context from messages, emails and photos, as well as use head gestures to respond without speaking.
Live Translation is supported as well. After languages are downloaded in the Translate app, users can start translation by pressing both stems, asking Siri or using the Action button on an iPhone.
The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add on-stem volume control, allowing users to swipe on the force sensor to change volume. They also offer up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled and as much as 22 hours when the charging case is included.
The wireless case works with Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible wireless chargers and USB-C.
Apple says durability has improved too, with better resistance to dust, sweat and water.
AirPods 5 start at $129 in the United States, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149. Both versions can be pre-ordered today and will arrive in stores on Friday, September 18.
