Apple has reportedly settled on the name “iPhone Duo” for its first foldable iPhone, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman now backing the branding just hours before Apple’s “Surprise and shine” special event.
The report significantly strengthens what had previously been a questionable last-minute rumor. The Apple Post reported earlier this week that leaker Majin Bu had claimed Apple would use the iPhone Duo name, although the source’s mixed track record meant there was little reason at the time to consider the branding confirmed.
Gurman now says Apple has landed on iPhone Duo as the name for the device. As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the foldable iPhone is also expected to start at $2,000, with Apple reportedly absorbing the higher cost of additional memory rather than pushing the entry price higher.
Storage options are said to extend all the way to 2TB. A fully configured model could cost roughly $3,000, putting the iPhone Duo comfortably above Apple’s existing iPhone Pro models and making it one of the company’s most expensive mainstream consumer devices.
Gurman also reports that the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil, an addition that would give the larger folding display another important distinction from the rest of the iPhone lineup. Apple has historically limited Apple Pencil compatibility to the iPad, so support on the iPhone Duo would mark the accessory’s first expansion to iPhone.
Two finishes are reportedly planned at launch: dark blue and white. That would give the first-generation foldable a deliberately limited color selection compared with Apple’s conventional iPhone lineup.
The device is now expected to ship in October rather than immediately alongside Apple’s other September hardware. A later release would give Apple additional time between today’s expected announcement and the first units reaching customers.
