Apple’s next Apple TV could be in line for a considerably more powerful processor than previous rumors have suggested, with newly discovered references in Apple’s software pointing to the A19 generation of chips.
Evidence uncovered in Apple code indicates that an unreleased Apple TV carries a model identifier associated with either the A19 or A19 Pro, as reported by MacRumors. If accurate, the discovery would represent a significant jump from the A15 Bionic used in the current third-generation Apple TV 4K.
The finding is particularly notable because earlier reports had generally pointed to Apple using an A17 Pro-class processor or another more recent A-series chip. Moving as far as the A19 generation would give the streaming box substantially more headroom for future tvOS features and potentially more demanding Apple Intelligence capabilities.
Apple has not refreshed the Apple TV 4K since 2022, leaving the current model unusually old compared with many other products in the company’s lineup. A faster processor would likely make relatively little difference to basic video streaming, but the extra performance could become more important as Apple expands Siri and artificial intelligence features across its devices.
The next Apple TV has also been rumored to adopt Apple’s own wireless networking technology, potentially improving Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Reports have repeatedly suggested that Apple is preparing a broader push into the smart home, meaning the Apple TV could become increasingly important as a hub connecting televisions, accessories and future Apple home products.
There is no guarantee that the chip references discovered in Apple’s code will translate directly to the final retail hardware, and Apple has yet to announce a replacement for the current Apple TV 4K. However, the discovery provides one of the clearest indications yet that the next model may be more than a modest internal refresh.
Apple is holding its ‘Surprise and shine’ special event tomorrow, September 9. While the event is expected to focus primarily on new iPhones and Apple Watch models, Apple has a growing collection of other hardware waiting for updates, including the Apple TV.
