Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max could end up being more than simply a larger version of the iPhone 18 Pro, with recent rumors pointing to several advantages that may be reserved for the biggest model.
The phone is expected to appear alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple’s first foldable iPhone at the company’s September 9 “Surprise and shine” event.
The most significant rumored difference is a mechanical variable-aperture Main camera. While earlier reports suggested both Pro models would gain the feature, more recent information has repeatedly pointed to possible Pro Max exclusivity.
As reported by MacRumors, the system could allow the camera to physically alter the amount of light entering the lens, potentially giving users greater control over exposure and depth of field.
Apple has never offered a variable aperture on an iPhone, making the feature one of the more technically interesting upgrades rumored for this year’s lineup.
The Pro Max is also expected to receive a larger battery than its predecessor. Recent regulatory and supply-chain reports have pointed to capacities above 5,500mAh in some markets, which, combined with the more efficient A20 Pro chip and LTPO+ display, could result in a meaningful battery-life improvement.
That added capacity may come with a trade-off. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to be slightly thicker and heavier than the current model.
Elsewhere, the Pro Max should share the broader iPhone 18 Pro upgrades, including a smaller Dynamic Island, Apple’s first 2nm A20 Pro chip, new color options and improvements to thermal management.
The Apple Post recently reported that iPhone 18 Pro pricing could rise significantly this year, with higher component and memory costs placing pressure on Apple’s margins.
That could make the Pro Max an especially expensive upgrade, but buyers looking for the strongest camera and battery package may have more reason than usual to choose the larger model.
Apple is expected to reveal the final differences between the two Pro models during the September 9 keynote.
