Apple has changed the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” in Apple Maps for users in the United States, shortly after President Donald Trump reportedly contacted the company directly over the change.
Apple began rolling out the new name on Tuesday following Trump’s executive order and an update to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System.
The change comes just a day after U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum revealed that Trump had “reached out to Apple directly” and was pushing the company to adopt the Lake America name.
Apple Maps users in the United States will now see “Lake America,” while users in Canada will continue to see “Lake Ontario.” Users elsewhere around the world will see both names.
Google Maps had already made the same change for U.S. users following the executive order.
Apple took a similar approach after Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” updating Apple Maps to reflect the U.S. government’s new designation while displaying different names depending on a user’s location.
