Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to cost more than $2,000 and feature a 7.8-inch folding display, Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a new C2 modem, and a redesigned version of iOS capable of automatically adapting apps between its two displays, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Speaking ahead of Apple’s September 9 event, Gurman has outlined several of the features expected from the long-rumored device, which The Apple Post previously reported could launch under the iPhone Ultra name.
The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a relatively small 5.5-inch display when closed, with the device unfolding to reveal a much larger 7.8-inch internal screen.
Rather than following the tall and narrow proportions of many existing foldable smartphones, Apple is reportedly opting for a shorter and wider “passport-style” design. When unfolded, the larger display is expected to provide an experience closer to a small iPad while still allowing the device to remain relatively compact when closed.
Previous reports have suggested that Apple has spent years working on the design of its first foldable iPhone, with particular attention being paid to the hinge, thickness, durability, and display crease.
According to Gurman, the final device is expected to feature a durable hinge and a significantly reduced display crease, although the crease will not be completely invisible.
Apple is also said to have “gone to great lengths” to ensure apps automatically resize and adapt as users move between the smaller outer display and the larger folding screen.
The software experience could prove particularly important for Apple’s entry into the foldable market. Rather than simply stretching existing iPhone apps across the larger display, Apple is expected to allow interfaces to dynamically adjust to make better use of the available space.
People inside Apple who have already used the device are reportedly impressed with the experience. The Apple Post reported last month that employees had praised the foldable iPhone’s pocketable design, durable hinge, large internal display, and usefulness as a camera viewfinder.
Internally, the device is expected to feature Apple’s latest hardware, including the A20 Pro chip and the company’s latest cellular modem, likely the C2.
Camera hardware will reportedly be one area where buyers will have to make a compromise compared with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Gurman expects the foldable iPhone to feature Wide and Ultra Wide rear cameras, but no dedicated Telephoto camera. That would leave Apple’s traditional Pro models with a significant advantage for optical zoom photography.
Apple is also expected to make unusual design choices elsewhere to accommodate the extremely thin folding body, with previous reports suggesting the device could use Touch ID rather than Face ID.
Battery life will be another major area of interest. Code discovered in the iOS 27 beta recently referenced an iPhone containing multiple batteries, adding to reports that Apple’s foldable device will use separate battery cells positioned inside each half of the phone.
Rumors have pointed to capacities of 1,921mAh and 2,962mAh, which would provide a combined capacity of approximately 4,883mAh.
All of this is expected to come at a considerable price.
Gurman expects the foldable iPhone to cost more than $2,000, which would comfortably make it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever released. Previous estimates have suggested pricing could potentially reach as high as $2,500 depending on configuration.
Apple has officially announced its September 9 “Surprise and shine” event, where the foldable iPhone is widely expected to make its debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time and 6:00 p.m. in the UK.
