New iOS app releases in the United States surged nearly 55% in January, report says

The number of new iOS apps released in the United States grew by nearly 55% year over year in January, according to new data, highlighting a significant increase in software being published on Apple’s App Store.

According to Business Insider, citing data from app intelligence firm Sensor Tower, new iOS app releases increased by almost 55% compared with the same month a year earlier. The growth followed an even larger 56% year-over-year increase in December, marking the strongest expansion in new App Store releases in four years.

The surge is believed to be driven largely by the rapid adoption of AI-powered app development tools. Often referred to as “vibe coding,” these tools enable developers to generate code, build interfaces, and create fully functioning apps with the help of artificial intelligence, dramatically lowering the barrier to entry for software development.

As a result, more independent developers, entrepreneurs, and first-time creators are now able to publish apps for iPhone and iPad without requiring the same level of traditional programming expertise.

The increase in new apps also comes as Apple continues to expand the capabilities of its development tools and prepares to roll out new Apple Intelligence features across its platforms. AI-assisted coding has become an increasingly common workflow among developers, helping speed up development and reduce the time required to bring new apps to market.

While the growing number of app releases reflects a healthy and expanding developer ecosystem, it also presents new challenges for Apple’s App Store review process, which must evaluate every app before it becomes available to customers.

Apple says it continues to review the vast majority of App Store submissions quickly, noting that 90% of submissions are reviewed within 48 hours despite the recent increase in activity.
