iOS 27 includes hundreds of smaller improvements Apple barely mentioned

Apple has officially unveiled iOS 27, and while the headline features such as Siri AI, the redesigned interface, and major system updates have taken centre stage, the update also includes hundreds of smaller improvements across the operating system that make everyday tasks faster, smoother, and more reliable.

Performance has been a major focus this year. Apple says iOS 27 delivers faster app launches, smoother unlocking, quicker AirDrop transfers, faster Camera launches in Low Power Mode, improved Bluetooth power management, faster text recognition in photos and documents, improved Messages syncing across devices, and smoother scrolling throughout the system, including the App Library, Control Center, and Safari. Safari itself gains faster web application performance, smoother animations, improved power efficiency, and quicker handling of JavaScript.

Photos receives a long list of refinements. Users can now add keywords to photos and videos, search using additional metadata, customise slideshows, save any slideshow as a video, save individual video frames as photos, organise albums more easily, react with any emoji in Shared Albums, view recent Shared Album activity, and access full-resolution photos and videos in Shared Albums. Apple has also added new collections such as Captured by Me and Identity Documents, along with improved search results for people and pets.

Messages gains several quality-of-life improvements, including automatic retries for failed messages, continuous sending of photos, videos and texts, easier searching by phone number or nickname, support for finding offloaded media, thumbnails for offloaded content, consolidated Tapback notifications, and faster access to recent camera captures. Shared Albums are also more capable, with additional participant permissions, easier invitations, expiry options, and support for Android and Windows users.

Apple has continued to expand Shortcuts with support for else-if actions, group conversations, screenshot and notification automations, richer “What’s On Screen” capabilities, the ability to store data directly in shortcuts, and a redesigned editor. Spotlight also becomes smarter with more relevant suggestions and faster indexing of shortcuts and actions.

The Health and Fitness apps receive several additions. iOS 27 introduces perimenopause and menopause tracking and education, faster Health app updates, synced step counts between Health and Fitness, more accurate route maps after workouts, improved treadmill distance accuracy, and support for time-zone changes in Sleep. Apple has also improved workout startup times and added better battery insights.

Maps gains enhanced Flyover, more accurate Visited Places, natural language route searching, expanded Guides availability, Parked Car widgets, and improved offline map updates. Apple has also made navigation headings and GPS positioning more accurate when using CarPlay.

Across the system, Apple has introduced a range of usability improvements, including independent alarm volume controls, easier access to Apple Account recovery codes, smarter sharing suggestions, more reliable NFC reading, improved FaceTime quality on poor connections, dual-camera FaceTime support, support for switching between two iPhones using the same phone number, and more flexible sharing options in Find My.

Typing and language support continue to expand with multilingual grammar checking, automatic punctuation on multilingual keyboards, smarter keyboard recommendations, support for new languages including Afrikaans, Basque, Galician, Luxembourgish, Xhosa, Zulu and Indigenous languages such as Cree and Comanche, plus improved Chinese and Japanese typing and handwriting recognition.

Apple has also refreshed several apps. Notes now supports Markdown copying, section links, divider lines, and improved PDF accessibility. Mail benefits from faster loading, better search indexing, improved Top Results, and more accurate unread counts. Apple Music gains refreshed album and artist pages, faster playback startup, improved streaming reliability, and new AutoMix transitions between songs. Journal receives iCloud sync status indicators, larger attachment limits, and timestamp support.

Finally, iOS 27 introduces countless smaller refinements throughout the interface, including updated app icons, customisable Liquid Glass effects, extra-large widgets, smoother Home Screen paging, more responsive animations, improved widget updates, easier Camera controls, more consistent system design elements, and dozens of under-the-hood optimisations designed to make the iPhone feel faster and more polished every day.
