Apple has cautioned that its new TechWoven cases for the iPhone 17 could show signs of wear over time, with MagSafe accessories likely to leave visible imprints.
TechWoven is Apple’s latest alternative to leather. The material is a woven textile made entirely from recycled polyester, created using multicoloured yarns on a Jacquard loom to give a textured finish.
Customers who pre-ordered TechWoven accessories ahead of next week’s iPhone 17 release are beginning to receive them. On the back of the packaging, Apple notes: “The TechWoven Case is made from a woven textile to protect your phone. The material may show wear over time. Interaction with MagSafe accessories will leave slight imprints.”
The new cases replace Apple’s short-lived FineWoven material, introduced last year as part of a pledge to phase out natural leather. FineWoven was marketed as a sustainable option made from 68% recycled content, but quickly developed a poor reputation.
Many users reported cases that scuffed, faded or peeled within days of normal use, leading Apple to discontinue the line.
TechWoven, built from 100% recycled polyester, is designed to be tougher and more sustainable — though Apple’s own warning makes clear the fabric will not stay pristine forever.
