Users in the EU can now download apps from marketplaces other than the Apple App Store

Apple has released iOS 17.4, bringing with it the ability for apps to be downloaded onto devices from app marketplaces other than the Apple App Store.

Available to users in the EU, where Apple has been forced to comply with a new Digital Markets Act, which also requires Apple to give users in the EU the ability to set alternative browser engines, alternative payment systems other than Apple Pay on iOS and iPadOS, and NFC access for banks and third-party payment providers, iOS 17.4 includes the provision for the creation of third-party app stores within the EU, enabling users to download apps through these marketplaces. This opens up the possibility for apps to be accessible outside of the App Store in a manner not previously possible.

The added support for third-party app marketplaces in the EU makes iOS 17.4 one of Apple’s most significant iOS updates to date.

Also launching with iOS 17.4 are some 600 new APIs, expanded app analytics, functionality for alternative browser engines, access to NFC for mobile payment systems, and options for processing app payments and distributing iOS apps outside the App Store.

iOS 17.4 is available now, with alternative browser engines, alternative payment systems and third-party app marketplaces limited to users in the EU to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which launches tomorrow on March 6.
