Netflix has started its password-sharing clampdown in the United States and United Kingdom, with the streaming service cracking down on users who share their account with others outside a household, which it defines as people who live in the same location as the account owner.
Beginning now, Netflix is emailing users in the two countries reminding them of their password-sharing policies, saying that users who piggyback off friends and family who live away from the account owner will need to purchase their own individual Netflix subscription.
The clampdown follows after the service announced last year that it has lost over 200,000 subscribers in the first three months of 2022 amid strong competition from the likes of Disney+, Amazon Prime and Apple TV+.
Netflix has since increased prices for its subscription tiers and is seeking to boost revenue by cracking down on users sharing accounts with one another to help better results moving forward.
The company previously said it will use a combination of IP addresses and device IDs to determine if an account was being used in the correct location.
