Twitter to start purging inactive accounts, freeing previously held usernames

Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced that the platform is in the process of purging inactive Twitter accounts, freeing usernames that have been held by accounts that haven’t been active for several years.

In a tweet on Monday, Musk said “We’re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you will probably see follower count drop.”

Neither Musk or Twitter have confirmed what counts as “no activity,” with it unknown if the activity status will be based on tweets or sign-in history.

Twitter’s official terms say “We encourage people to actively log in and use Twitter when they register an account. To keep your account active, be sure to log in at least every 30 days. Accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity” however, prior to Musk’s takeover, those rules have never been enforced.
