Unreleased AirPods and AirPods Charging Case leak in iOS 16.4 beta code, likely updated USB-C model

Apple has rolled out the release candidate version of its upcoming iPhone software update iOS 16.4, giving developers early access to the update prior to its expected public debut within the next two weeks, and uncovering what appears to be unreleased AirPods and an AirPods Charging Case in the beta code.

According to developer “Aaron” on Twitter, the iOS 16.4 release candidate code references previously unseen AirPods with the model number A3048, and a new AirPods Charging Case with model number A2968, suggesting that Apple is working on new models, despite reports previously claiming that there would be no new AirPods releases this year.

With rumors suggesting that Apple will transition the iPhone away from the Lightning Connector and to USB-C with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro this year, it could be that Apple is preparing an update to its AirPods lineup with a new USB-C charging case, although it is unlikely that the new earbuds will feature any new features over the current-generation.

Reports have previously suggested that Apple would add support for USB-C charging to its AirPods lineup with the next update, although until now, it hasn’t been believed that Apple would add USB-C support mid-cycle rather than waiting for the next-generation of the wireless earbuds to launch.

The code doesn’t reveal anything about the new AirPods and AirPods Charging Case, although it does confirm that a new model is seemingly in development.
