Apple planned $49 Apple Pencil with iPhone support, claims rumor

Apple planned to release a new $49 Apple Pencil with iPhone support earlier this year, although the decision was made to cancel the release after one million units were produced, according to a rumor shared on Thursday.

According to a Weibo post, shared on Twitter by DuanRui, Apple allegedly manufactured the new Apple Pencil with iPhone support earlier in the year and intended to launch the accessory in September, but the project was terminated at the last minute for unknown reasons.

At the time the accessory was cancelled, the rumor claims that Apple had one million units already manufactured and ready for sale, that are now due to be scrapped.

The post claims that the Apple Pencil for iPhone would have offered no pressure sensing, nor would it have a battery. Instead, the accessory would reportedly use a chip to power the stylus from the screen, similar to the Samsung S- Pen.

The rumor doesn’t specify why Apple allegedly cancelled the stylus at the eleventh hour.
