Apple working to drop the “Hey” in “Hey Siri” trigger, says Gurman

Apple is reportedly working to change the hands-free “Hey Siri” trigger phrase to just “Siri” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is out with his weekly Power On newsletter today.

According to Gurman, Apple has been working on the revised trigger phrase for several months and could release the change next year or the year after, with the iPhone maker reportedly testing the simplified wake word with employees and collecting data before the public release.

Gurman says “The complexity involves Siri being able to understand the singular phrase “Siri” in multiple different accents and dialects. Having two words—“Hey Siri”—increases the likelihood of the system properly picking up the signal.”

“Apple has also been engineering further changes. It will integrate the voice assistant deeper into third-party apps and services and improve its ability to understand users and take the correct course of action.”
