Apple has released iOS 16.1, bringing a new Clean Energy Charging feature to the iPhone in the US, which will optimize charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources, helping to decrease the carbon footprint of charging an iPhone overnight.

According to a new toggle in the Settings app, the Clean Energy Charging feature will try to reduce a user’s carbon footprint
by selectively charging when lower carbon emission electricity is available. The device will learn from the user’s daily charging routine so it can reach full charge before they need to use it, similar to the existing Optimized Battery Charging feature, which also learns a user’s daily charging routine and stops recharging hitting 100% overnight, with the device reaching a full charge in time for when the iPhone is picked up in the morning.
