Apple is preparing to launch a wave of new Macs in the coming months according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who suggests in the latest edition of his weekly Power On newsletter that Apple will launch new Macs next month at its rumored March special event, followed by even more new models “around May or June.”
Gurman has previously suggested that Apple unveil at least five new Macs this year, including a new entry-level MacBook Pro, high-end iMac dubbed the “iMac Pro,” a new Mac Pro with Apple silicon, and more. While it isn’t clear what Apple will announce first, the reporter says “Given that two of the oldest Apple Silicon Macs in the lineup today are the entry-level MacBook Pro and Mac mini, I’d guess that those models will be next to be upgraded.”
Apple’s new Macs are expected to feature a mix of the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips introduced last year, as well as an all-new “M2” chip. Apple’s 2022 entry-level MacBook Pro is expected to feature the new next-generation “M2” custom processor, so if Gurman’s assumed release schedule is to be believed, we could see this introduced at Apple’s rumored March keynote, where the company is also expected to announce a new 5G iPhone SE and updated iPad Air.
Speaking about the rest of the Mac lineup, Gurman says a redesigned MacBook Air will likely be announced in time for the holidays, with a new Mac mini being announced “around May or June,” typically when Apple hosts its annual WWDC conference.
Apple will want to drum up developer support for the super-powered Mac Pro chips, so I’d guess that the company wants to debut that machine as early as the WWDC event in June and ship it in the fall. A revamped MacBook Air would be a nice holiday seller, so it makes sense to release it around that time of year—even if Apple had originally planned to get it out the door at the end of 2021 or in early 2022.
