Apple scraps plans to release new iPad Air with OLED display in 2022

Apple has scrapped plans to release a new iPad Air with an OLED display in 2022, according to respected industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggests Apple will continue to use LCD panels for the device going into next year over concerns surrounding performance and cost.

Rumors and reports from multiple sources have been suggesting that Apple will release a new OLED iPad Air next year, with Kuo claiming in March that the device would arrive in the second half of 2022.

In a research note shared with investors on Saturday, Kuo has claimed that those earlier plans have been canceled “because the performance and cost could not meet Apple’s requirements.”

According to the TF International Securities analyst, Apple will now continue research and development of new display technologies for future iterations, adding that “lighter, thinner, and foldable designs are the major long-term trends for tablet-type products over the next 3–5 years.”
