Apple to expand Apple Pay’s Express Transit feature to San Diego, Philadelphia and other cities

Philadelphia’s SEPTA, Boston’s MBTA and San Diego’s SDMTS are among a group of transit agencies across North America who are prepping Apple Pay Express Transit support.

Express Transit, which allows commuters to pay for their travel using Apple Pay without the traditional Touch ID or Face ID authentication is running in major cities such as London, New York, and Washington, D.C.

MacRumors has learnt that during the second quarter of 2020, Philadelphia’s SEPTA aims to have Express Transit available for its customers, with Boston’s MBTA saying the payment method will be piloted in 2022 and rolled out widely in 2023

San Diego’s SDMTS plans to begin implementing a new fare payment system in late 2020 and Toronto’s Metrolinx claiming it plans to trial new payment systems in 2020 although no specifics were shared. Montréal’s STM says Apple Pay support will launch Apple Pay around 2022-2023 for credit cards.
