Update: ChargerLAB suggests Pegatron is starting AirPower mass production from January 21.
Apple has reportedly sent its long-awaited wireless charging mat AirPower into production according to a source within Apple’s supply chain.
The report comes from ChargerLAB who claim a conversation with a “credible source” within the supply chain has confirmed the wireless charging pad on which customers will be able to charge three Apple devices at once: iPhone, Apple Watch and a wireless AirPods charging case may soon be released.
According to ChargerLAB, Chinese supplier Luxshare Precision is Apple’s chosen AirPower manufacturer, the same firm who produces AirPods and USB-C cables for the company. The news was shared in a tweet on Saturday showing a conversation over Chinese messaging app WeChat in which the source claims he heard the AirPower charging mat will be released soon.
The conversation doesn’t reveal any new details, such as when exactly it will go on sale and what caused the delay, although as described within an article we published in December numerous factors are believed to have caused the AirPower launch delay, including overheating prototypes and coil layout issues.
Only time will tell if the reports are true. AirPower remains a big mystery, so much information is still unknown, however hopefully Apple will soon loosen its lips and give us all an update on its long-awaited charging mat.
ChargerLAB have a mixed reliability history. They correctly reported third-party Apple-certified Lightning to USB-C cables would be available in early 2019, although they also said the 2018 iPhone range would all come with an 18W USB-C power adapter.
