Apple to offer paid subscription-based content through News app as early as spring

Apple could launch new paid subscription-based content from publishers such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post within the News app on iOS and macOS as early as spring reports Bloomberg News.

The reports come after the acquisition of digital magazine subscription service Texture earlier in the year which sparked rumors that Apple would offer customers an Apple Music-like service which for a monthly fee would grant access to all paid subscription-based content on the Apple News platform.

Bloombergs’ report suggests some top level publishers are concerned that subscribers would simply abandon the current online offerings and only pay for the Apple service, cutting the actual earnings the publishers make.

2019 is ramping up to be a big year for Apple’s paid services. Asides from the subscription service in News, Apple is also said to be working on a Netflix-like service with a whole host of original TV shows and movies. Some analysts suggest Apple will introduce a premium bundle covering all its digital services, offering customers the option of paying one monthly fee for unlimited access to Apple Music, News, the new Netflix-like service, and possibly iCloud storage plans too.
