Apple releases watchOS 5 for Apple Watch with Podcasts, Walkie-Talkie, and more

watchOS 5

watchOS 5 is now available to download for the Apple Watch Series 1, Apple Watch Series 2 and Apple Watch Series 3, bringing an array of new features to the watchOS experience, including Activity Competitions to allow you to compete with friends and earn points when you reach your fitness goals, a push-to-talk Walkie-Talkie app and auto workout detection.

Apple Watch users can download the update now by going into the Settings tab within the Watch app on their connected iPhone. The update requires that the Apple Watch has at least 50% battery before beginning the install.

With the additions to Siri in iOS 12, it’s no surprise that similar features were also added to the watch within watchOS 5. The Siri watch face has been updated with sports and maps, as well as shortcuts to the new Siri actions. Apple has also eliminated the need to say “Hey Siri” before invoking a command.

Select notifications are becoming more interactive. For example, paying for rides directly within the Watch version of an app or responding to Yelp reservations. Additionally for the first time ever, Apple is adding the ability to view certain webpages directly on the Watch, through new WebKit support.
