Tim Cook to be deposed in Qualcomm’s FTC case

Following Qualcomm controversies, Apple CEO Tim Cook is set to be deposed in Qualcomm’s anticompetitive tactics case. In what is going to almost certainly be a private disposition, Cook is scheduled to appear June 27.

According to Bloomberg, the case accuses Apple of “lying to regulators in order to spur investigations of Qualcomm” and that “Apple had filed complaint over chip royalties.” The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in January accused Qualcomm of violating the FTC Act by using anticompetitive tactics and abusing its patent portfolio to remain the dominant supplier of LTE chips for smartphones. Later in June a judge ruled that Qualcomm will face an antitrust lawsuit.

This isn’t the first legal run in that Apple and Qualcomm have had. I’m the beginning of 2017 Apple filed a $1 billion lawsuit accusing the company of charging unfair royalties for “technologies they have nothing to do with.” Qualcomm on the other hand believes that it’s technology is “at the heart of every iPhone.” Qualcomm responded be following a suit accusing Apple of breaching licensing agreements, making false statements, and encouraging regulatory attacks against Qualcomm in several countries.

It’s was reported last year that the CEOs of both companies would rather settle this case than engage in a long court battle. It was rumored that late last year that Apple was considering ditching Qualcomm chips and rely solely on Intel and MediaTek.
