With the public release of HomePod nearing, new details shared by 9to5Mac have shown that Apple will push future HomePod software updates through the Home app on iOS.
Similar to how Apple pushes watchOS updates, a user with a paired iOS device will need to be in close proximity to the speaker for HomePod software updates to install, with Apple offering automatic and manual software updates, although it’s unclear how automatic releases will be managed.
Once a new HomePod software version has been released, the Home app on iOS will send a push notification and static app badge prompting the user to initiate the software install. HomePod will run an iOS variant, meaning it’s likely new updates will be released alongside the release of main iOS updates.
It’s believed the first software update for HomePod will be released at the launch of iOS 11.3, a software release expected to bring multi-room audio and support for pairing two or more HomePods together for stereo sound.
