Apple to slow production on iPhone 8 after numbers favor 8 Plus and X

With all of the new features announced this year there’s never been a better time to pick up an iPhone 8 Plus or the newly released iPhone X. Of course that leaves the standard 4.7-inch iPhone 8 behind and Apple’s production line may also soon reflect that.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects iPhone 8 production to see a 50-60 percent sequential decline this quarter. Earlier this week, research firm Canalys said the iPhone 8 Plus out sold the iPhone 8 last quarter with 8 Plus topping out at 6.3 million units versus 5.4 million for the iPhone 8. During an interview CEO Tim Cook claimed that the iPhone 8 Plus had “gotten off to the fastest start of any Plus model” which he also claimed was “a bit of a surprise” to the company.

With fewer major selling points and given a consumer preference for iPhone 8 Plus on a limited price gap, we expect iPhone 8 production orders to see 50-60% QoQ decline in 1Q18F

Currently the recently released iPhone X still has a 3-4 week shipping estimate and Kuo expects production will rise 35-45 percent this quarter compared to last quarter to keep up with demand for the upcoming holiday season. His report also noted that Apple’s primary manufacturer, Foxconn, will move it’s focus from iPhone 8 Plus production to the iPhone X in hopes to fulfill additional orders.
