Apple’s next iPhone shall feature ‘game changing’ 3D facial recognition technology within the devices FaceTime camera
According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s next-generation iPhone (dubbed the iPhone 8) shall feature ‘game changing’ 3D facial recognition technology within the devices FaceTime camera, with the analyst claiming that the advanced 3D front camera system could be used in new innovative games that can accurately replace a character’s head with that of the user.
Following in-line with other reports surrounding Apple’s next flagship handset, technology such as the 3D facial recognition system could also be used for advanced biometric authentication, meaning Apple would be able to enable two-step authentication to the iPhone with a combination of facial recognition with fingerprint scanning. As previously rumoured, the Infrared transmitter will apparently use vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser technology from Lumentum, the front camera will be produced by Sony and the IR receiver will be manufactured by Foxconn/Sharp.
Ming-Chi Kuo’s report opens the possibility that future iPhones to be released after 2017 will use the same 3D facial recognition technology on the devices rear-cameras however todays report doesn’t give any clue as to when such technology shall be implemented by Apple.
