LG to produce 20 million displays for 6.1-inch LCD low-cost iPhone models
Following earlier reports that claimed Apple was on the verge of securing a deal with LG Display to produce between 2 and 4 million OLED display panels for the upcoming 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, a new report from Digitimes, citing a report from Korean-language site Newspim, suggests LG could also be responsible for production of millions of LCD displays for Apple’s 6.1-inch low-cost iPhone models.
Korean site Newspim suggests LG Display will produce 20 million screens for the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone in 2018 alone. In addition, the report claims LG is “likely” to secure the majority of 6.5-inch panel orders from Apple in 2019, which will see the firm ramp up its OLED shipments to 10 million units in the year.
Although Apple appears to be throwing more work towards LG Display, Samsung Electronics Co is believed to still play a large role in the manufacturing of the display panels for the upgraded ‘iPhone X 2’.
LG Display has reportedly signed a deal with Apple under which it will start shipping both LCD and OLED panels to the US smartphone vendor for the production of its next-generation iPhone devices in the second half of 2018, according to a Korea-based Newspim report. – Based on the contract, LG Display is expected to ship 3-4 million OLED panels as well as 20 million LCD smartphone panels to Apple in 2018, said the report, which added that LG Display will produce the OLED panels needed for the iPhone from its E6 6G fab in Paju.
Apple’s l0w-cost 6.1-inch LCD iPhone is said to feature a full edge-to-edge display with the same slimline bezels and TrueDepth Camera System to allow for Face ID, and of course Animoji and Memoji coming with iOS 12.
Unlike the iPhone X, the low-cost 6.1-inch model is said to only feature one single camera on the rear (just like the iPhone 8). Some reports have claimed that the new iPhone may not support 3D Touch to help keep production costs down, in return helping Apple reduce the retail price of the handset.
