Leaked iOS 11 GM code hints at a new iPod touch with Face ID
iPod is a product category Apple has seemingly neglected over recent years, with the line being shortened in July when Apple discontinued both the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle, however; a new report today that claims to of found references to an “iPod8,1,” within iOS 11 GM code suggests Apple may be planning to relaunch the iPod touch at their “Let’s meet at our place” media event tomorrow.
While at this stage no other solid reports have claimed that Apple could be about to pump life back into the iPod, eager eyed developers has suggested that the next generation iPod touch could feature Face ID, a new facial recognition system expected to launch with the iPhone 8, allowing users to unlock their device and authenticate purchases with a simple scan of their face.
If Apple were indeed to update the iPod touch tomorrow, it’s expected the device would use either an A9 or A10 chip, with improved storage consistent with configurations introduced with more recent Apple releases.

While the idea of a new iPod touch with Face ID may sound exciting, as pointed out by iPhone leaker Benjamin Geskin, it’s possible Apple is simply future proofing the device, with Face ID references intended for a second update in the future.
