Jimmy Iovine confirms Apple is interested in ‘Pop Culture’ TV shows, saying music content isn’t enough for the company
According to a report published by The Hollywood Reporter, Apple Music head, Jimmy Iovine, has told TV critics that Apple’s music streaming service needs to go beyond just music in order to grow and reach new users, adding that the company is interested in ‘Pop Culture’ TV shows.
At Apple Music, what we’re trying to create is an entire cultural, pop cultural experience, and that happens to include audio and video. If South Park walks into my office, I am not going to say you’re not musicians, you know? We’re going to do whatever hits popular culture smack on the nose.
Last summer, Apple bought the rights to bring The Late Late Show’s Carpool Karaoke series, featuring British comedian James Corden, to Apple Music, with 16 new half-hour episodes planned to be released later this year.
When the purchase was announced, , Eddy Cue described Carpool Karaoke on Apple Music as a perfect fit.
“We love music, and Carpool Karaoke celebrates it in a fun and unique way that is a hit with audiences of all ages. It’s a perfect fit for Apple Music — bringing subscribers exclusive access to their favorite artists and celebrities who come along for the ride.”
