iPhone is named the world’s most popular smartphone of 2016, with the iPhone 6s taking top the spot
iPhone has been named the world’s most popular smartphone of 2016 in terms of global shipments according to research firm IHS Markit. Research from IHS Markit’s Smartphone Shipment Database show that Apple’s iPhone 6s took the title of best selling handset followed by the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge took the fifth spot in the IHS Markit chart (as shown below) which is rather impressive considering the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge were launched in March 2016, around six months prior to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September.
While the chart doesn’t give any exact date on the amount of shipments for each smartphone model, it appears that Apple was reaching the 60 million mark with he iPhone 6s apposed to the Galaxy S7 edge and most other Samsung smartphones which are around the 25 million mark.
Earlier this month Apple quietly re-launched the iPhone 6 at selected Asian carriers, introducing a new 32GB gold configuration which was never previously released by Apple when the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched around the world in 2014.
