Apple’s next iPhone could offer a new facial recognition feature which uses laser sensors according to analysts
Alongside the reports that Apple’s next iPhone, dubbed the ‘iPhone 8’ will feature improved water resistance, analyst Cowen’s Timothy Arcuri, reports a new facial recognition feature, powered by laser sensors, will be on the list of features making their way to the late 2017 handset.
Located near the FaceTime HD camera on the front of the phone, Timothy Arcuri says Apple will engineer a sensor that will recognise “some form of facial/gesture recognition” which will allow users to unlock their device without needing to touch a button. – Speaking of buttons, Timothy also follows the wide speculation Apple will embed the Touch ID home button into the display of the ‘iPhone 8’.
While Apple devices don’t support facial recognition as of yet to perform key tasks such as unlocking devices and authorising payments, the company does use deep facial recognition within their Photos app, with the software recognising faces and linking them to individual albums and libraries.
Alongside the possibility of facial recognition and improved water resistance, rumours speculate Apple’s next iPhone could feature a dual-camera lens on the smaller 4.7-inch model alongside a glossy ‘Jet White’ colour variation to follow in the footsteps of the hugely successful Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
