Apple introduces new iPhone disassembly robot Daisy
Apple has unveiled Daisy, a new iPhone disassembly robot based at their Austin distribution centre that disassembles devices to retrieve materials that traditional recyclers can’t, according to the company.
Daisy, Apple’s second-generation disassembly robot replaces Liam that was introduced in March 2016. Unlike Liam, Daisy is three times smaller, more efficient and faster, helping Apple pry apart 200 iPhone devices per-hour and separate their component parts for recycling.
From the iPhone 5 to the iPhone 7 Plus, Daisy is made up of five robots that can pick out aluminium, gold, silver, copper, palladium, tantalum, and more.
At Apple, we’re constantly working toward smart solutions to address climate change and conserve our planet’s precious resources, said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.
Daisy is working at Apple’s Austin based distribution centre and is the only machine of its kind in the world, however, a second Daisy will go online sometime soon in Breda, Netherlands according to the company.
In recognition of Earth Day, we are making it as simple as possible for our customers to recycle devices and do something good for the planet through Apple GiveBack. We’re also thrilled to introduce Daisy to the world, as she represents what’s possible when innovation and conservation meet.
