App Store now allows apps to be made available for pre-order
Within an announcement published to iTunes Connect, Apple has shared that developers can now mark new apps as available for pre-order on the App Store.
Super Mario Run was the first app which was made available for pre-order earlier in the year, however only now has Apple made the feature available to all developers.
App Store pre-orders give developers the opportunity for developers to build excitement for a new app release and while also guaranteeing downloads from the second an app is made public.
Apple notes that the pre-order feature is only available for new apps entering the App Store and that app releases must be no more than 90 days in the future and no sooner than two days in the future.
Apple details the steps developers need to take to make a new app available to pre-order within the iTunes Connect announcement…
- From the homepage, click My Apps, select the app, and select Pricing and Availability in the left column. You’ll see the Pre-Orders section if your app has never been published on the App Store.
- Select Make available for pre-order, choose a date to release your app for download, then click Save in the upper-right corner. The release date must be at least two days in the future, but no more than 90 days in the future. Submit your app for review.
- Once your app is approved and you’re ready to make it available for pre-order, return to Pricing and Availability, confirm the date your app will be released for download, and click Release as Pre-Order in the upper-right corner.

Once an app which was marked as available for pre-order is made public, the app will automatically download on a users device and they will be billed.
