Apple has announced Digital ID, a new way for users to securely store and present their identification in Apple Walletusing information from their U.S. passport.
At launch, Digital ID will roll out in beta at TSA checkpoints across more than 250 airports in the U.S., allowing travellers to verify their identity in person during domestic travel without showing a physical ID. Apple says more uses for Digital ID — including age and identity verification at select businesses and online — will follow.
Digital ID provides a secure way to create and present identification even for users who don’t have a REAL ID–compliant driver’s licence or state ID. However, it is not a replacement for a physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Wallet.
Users can access their Digital ID in Apple Wallet by double-clicking the side or Home button, then holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader. Before sharing, they’ll be shown what specific details are being requested and must confirm with Face ID or Touch ID.
Apple first introduced support for driver’s licences and state IDs in Wallet in 2022. With Digital ID, it aims to make digital identity more widely accessible and secure — all managed privately within the Apple ecosystem.
