5x telephoto camera again rumored to come to 6.1‑inch iPhone 16 Pro
The iPhone 16 Pro is slated to feature the tetraprism periscope camera with 5x optical zoom, initially introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to DigiTimes.
As reported by MacRumors, Taiwanese lens manufacturers Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) are expected to be the primary suppliers for the advanced camera components of the iPhone 16 Pro. Sources close to the supply chain have disclosed that both companies are increasing production in anticipation of the iPhone 16’s release.
Largan, which supplied the periscope lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, is likely to secure a significant portion of the orders once again. Largan’s chairman, Adam Lin, recently indicated that the optical components sector is projected to see peak sales from September to November, coinciding with the expected release period for the iPhone 16 Pro models.
GSEO, a new entrant in this supply chain, is reportedly undergoing quality testing with encouraging results. According to DigiTimes, GSEO’s periscope lenses are currently in the validation phase, with production expected to begin in mid-July, provided they pass the necessary tests.
The tetraprism periscope lens, introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, provides up to 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom, a significant improvement over previous models limited to 3x optical zoom. In addition to enhanced optical zoom capabilities, the periscope lens is also expected to improve overall image stabilization and low-light performance.
