15 years ago today, Apple launched the App Store, with an initial 500 apps available.
To begin with, only 125 of the initial 500 available applications, were free to download, with the others charging up to $9.99 or less.
The App Store’s debut coincided with the launch of the iPhone 3G, which was the first iPhone to come with the App Store pre-installed.
The number of apps available on the App Store peaked at around 2.2 million in 2017, but declined slightly over the next few years as Apple began a process to remove old or 32-bit apps.
